The FIRST season reveal for 2024/2025 is on Saturday, September 7th, 2024, at 11 AM - 3 PM at SRHS*. This is pending school administration approval, so use pencil on those calendars please.
At that time, everyone across the world will find out all about the challenge for this year.
The rules and point scoring options are presented. Then each team gathers to start thinking, planning, sketching, sharing, and working together to see what kind of 18" x 18" robot they can build to try and win!
Student Executive Team Leaders will greet you, introduce you, and get you all sorted out at your first meeting.
They will soon need to make a team assignment (Cybirds, Talons, Mech Hawks) and maybe even a subteam selection.
If you decide YOU WANT TO JOIN - we have a few forms that will be coming your way.
But, you are welcome to attend as many meetings as you want to see if it's for you. We only need one form filled out for that.
So GET on the mailing list now, and we'll keep you updated.
Please take a look around this site to try and get a feel for it all. You can always learn more about the FIRST FTC program on the national website at this link.
Membership is free!
There are requirements for volunteer time, safety presentations for students, a family meeting or two, and a few other things down the road.

Each of our three teams usually has three subteams:
Build | Programming | Business
The Business team does a wide variety of things, all while documenting the processes of the whole team with either an Engineering Notebook and/or a Digital Engineering Portfolio for judges to review. Biz teams take photos, plan events, preserve documents, brainstorm community projects and fundraisers, maintain websites, seek sponsorships, and many other things.
Build teams use all of the metal brackets, parts, pieces, tools, and screws to somehow assemble and endlessly tweak the machines during the entire season. They can be seen at meetings in the workshops, sawing, banging, fixing, and laughing like mad scientists. They haul large toolboxes for repairs at competitions. They make concepts come to life.
The Programmers study the point systems and help figure out what the team's goals should be. Then they use Java coding, Android Studios, Git Hub, and all kinds of tech trickery to program the robot to do what they want. They use video game controllers and control hubs to make it all work and drive those robots around! They might grab and pick up items, scoop parts, launch rings into a goal, or stack bricks. There are many ways to add points, and every team has their own technique. Members learn from experienced students each year, and adult mentors help to train as well.
We can ALWAYS use mentors for ALL types of things. Please consider giving some time.

The FTC season begins with the 2024 reveal day on Sept. 7th. Our first parent/student info session will be on Tuesday, Sept. 3rd, where we'll give you details on everything else to follow.
The teams can decide when they think they are ready to begin competing regionally with qualifying competitions set between mid-November and late January on weekends.
Then, there can be Regional Championships in Feb. or March. And, finally, the chance is always there to qualify for World competition, usually held in April or May.
Meetings will be held at the school.
Meeting dates are Tues & Thurs. from 6-8 pm.
Once the season gets fully underway, our teams have traditionally also met on Saturdays, from 10 am to 1 pm., or other times will be set and shared as needed.
And as more work and pracctice is needed, meetings have extended from 10 am - 4 pm, with a parent-sponsored lunch often provided.
Our teams will be competing in two regional qualifier events between mid-November and early February.

Please, do NOT become overwhelmed reading that plan. We have long dealt with teens who have other things going on in their lives! We know. But, you'll find that once you get comfortable with everyone, these meeting times will fly by! There is much fun, and learning, and laughter.
All these names, all these teams!
We are part of the South River Robotics Club, an organization of students based at South River High School in Edgewater, Maryland, supported by a couple of 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. Confusingly similar names often cause trouble with the funding end of things. FTC Robotics are supported by the Power Hawks Robotics Club (PHRC), Inc. FRC Robotics (team name Powerhawks) are supported by another group (PHR). The club consists of four separate robotics teams. Three are FTC teams, and one, Team #1111, is an FRC team that builds even bigger robots and also competes.
We are all a part of FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an international organization aiming to promote youth interest in engineering and technology. Within this program, the teams participate in robotics competitions and support the mission of equipping the next generation with the necessary skills to improve the world through competitive robotics. It's a great organization, and we urge everyone to learn more at their website. The FTC teams are also part of a regional program provider who helps to coordinate all of the area competitions and lots of exciting stuff. Their name is FIRST® Chesapeake, and you can visit their site for more details.
Community Impact
In addition to building robots, the FTC Robotics teams utilize impactful outreach programs to maintain an active community presence. From helping at community events, hosting a popular Women in STEM event, hosting LEGO events for area schools and groups, our teams strive to spread STEM education throughout the community. We achieve this through hands-on activities that teach students STEM principles in the classroom and mentoring younger school and community group teams also using FIRST. We seek to have a presence all over our area to spread the seeds of STEM for the future. We are constantly expanding the scope of these programs, with additional focus on female and special needs students, promoting equal representation in STEM and robotics.
Sponsorships graciously accepted
We are only able to support these teams and programs with the help of dedicated sponsors and mentors. Our teams spend a lot of money each year to design, build, and field multiple competitive robots. We are always seeking additional funding to maintain all of our valuable programs. Over 40 students, along with hundreds of kids whose lives they touch, rely on the support that you could provide through materials, mentoring, or financial assistance.
Please contact us at robots@FTCpower.org if you are interested in sponsoring this great program or if you have questions. We would love to share more with you.

We are in Phase 2 of our competition season right now! Teams are full and we are ready to create.
Phase 1 meetings are set for Tues/Thurs evenings, 6-8 pm.
Note Phase 2 began after October 1. We are now setting up Saturday meeting schedules and may eventually opt to expand general meeting hours as the competition dates grow closer.
